UPDATE: Risperdal Class Action Lawsuit Settlement
November 2013 – Johnson & Johnson (J&J) paid $2.2 billion to settle criminal and civil charges that they illegally marketed Risperdal to children and paid kickback schemes to doctors. Attorneys allege that J&J knew about studies linking Risperdal to gynecomastia (breast growth) in children, but they ignored warnings from the FDA against marketing Risperdal to children. Risperdal was not approved for any uses in children until 2006.
J&J ignored warnings from the FDA. Between 1999-2005, sales representatives were instructed to contact child psychiatrists and market Risperdal as a safe and effective treatment for childhood behavior disorders (ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism, oppositional-defiant disorder). Many of these children developed severe gynecomastia and other side effects, including “medically serious weight gain” and type-2 diabetes.
Risperdal and Gynecomastia
Risperdal (risperidone) is an anti-psychotic drug that works by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the brain. In some patients, the pituitary gland compensates for this change by increasing production of prolactin, which is a hormone that stimulates breast growth and milk production.
In males, excess prolactin can cause gynecomastia (enlargement of glandular tissue in the breasts). Risperdal is associated with extremely severe, disfiguring gynecomastia — up to 38D cup-sizes have been reported. Most doctors recommend surgery and/or liposuction to treat gynecomastia. Without treatment, psychological trauma is highly likely to occur — especially for young boys and teenagers.
Risperdal Side Effects
- Pituitary tumors
- Tardive dyskinesia
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)
- Weight gain (rapid and extreme)
- Type-2 diabetes
- Bone loss (osteolysis)
- Involuntary movements
- Tardive dyskinesia
- Sexual dysfunction
- Delayed puberty
- Increased risk of stroke and death among elderly dementia patients

About Class Action Lawsuits
Class action lawsuits involve a large number of plaintiffs who had similar injuries against the same defendant. Instead of filing individual lawsuits, plaintiffs consolidate their claims into one claim, and they entire group is represented by one plaintiff (the “class representative”). If compensation is awarded, members of the class action share it evenly. They also share the costs of hiring attorneys to provide legal representation.

In addition, approximately 500 individual plaintiffs have filed personal injury lawsuits, including 130 claims involving gynecomastia. Johnson & Johnson agreed to settle the first five (5) cases for an undisclosed amount of money before jury trials began. All of the plaintiffs took Risperdal as children and developed gynecomastia.
